RIP MARYANNE AMACHER (February 25, 1943 – October 22, 2009)

Sad sad news for the sonic world!

Maryanne Amacher was known for her installations, which caused listeners to question the nature of sound and the effects it has on the brain. "She worked extensively with the physiological (not psychoacoustic) phenomenon called otoacoustic emission, in which the ears themselves act as sound generating devices." [Wikipedia.org]

Green Papaya Art Projects and SABAW Media Art Kitchen welcome Malaysian experimental sound artists Yandsen Yong and Siew-wai Kok in Regurgitating Rabbits, a two-day session of improvised encounters and open sound lab. A collaborative project by Experimental Musicians and Artists Co-operative Malaysia (EMACM) and SABAW Media Art Kitchen, the open sound lab is a platform that encourages cross-border and cross-disciplinary collaborations among contemporary sound, performance and electronic media artists practicing in Asia, Europe and the U.S. 

Yandsen Yong is a woodwind musician, he plays the saxophones, clarinet and flute. Yandsen was the veteran lead vocal and band leader of the explosive Malaysian Chinese rock band Moxuan in late 1990s. He then ventured into a new direction in music – free jazz, improvised music and contemporary composition. Yandsen is the woodwind player of Klangmutationen (Malaysia), where the band has released albums through Utech Records (USA) and Dream Sheep (Italy). He has collaborated with artists and musicians such as Kar-Mun Tham, Lee- Kwang Goh, Ronnie Khoo, Aziz Ali, Siew-wai Kok, Chor-Guan Ng, Sow-Yee Au, Donna Miranda, Darren Moore, Brian O’ Reily, Thierry Monnier, punk band Carburetor Dung and many more. Yandsen has played in Notthat Balai Art Festival 2007 (Malaysia), Mosaic Festival Singapore 2008 and Choppa Eclectic Improvised Music Festival 2008 (Singapore). Yandsen is a member of the Experimental Musicians & Artists Cooperative Malaysia (EMACM) and the co-founder of Studio in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur (SiCKL). 

Siew-wai Kok is a voice improviser and video artist. She has studied and lived in USA for 7 years. During her stay in the States, she has studied with a few art luminaries such as Pauline Oliveros, Tony Conrad and Peer Bode, who have introduced her to a whole “new world” in the arts. Siew-wai has participated in festivals such as the Iskandar Malaysia Contemporary Art Show 2009, Nyoba Kan Butoh Festival 2008, Choppa Eclectic Improvised Music Festival 2008 (Singapore), Notthatbalai Art Festival 2007, International Film Festival Rotterdam 2007, Beyond/In Western New York Biennial 2005 and more. Siew-wai has collaborated with video artists, dancers and musicians, such as Koji Tambata, Sow-Yee Au, Donna Miranda, Lena Ang, Swee-Keong Lee, Chor-Guan Ng, Steve Baczkowski, Patrick Cain, Jax Deluca, Scott Valkwitch and more. She collaborates regularly with members of the Experimental Musicians & Artists Cooperative Malaysia (EMACM) since 2006. Siew-wai is the co-founder of Studio in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur (SiCKL). 

Reflex Reactions is an improv duo made up by Yandsen Yong and Siew-wai Kok where Yandsen plays the saxophone, clarinet and flute while Siew Wai does voice improvisation. The duo creates musical conversations through attentive listening and communication with each other. “Create ‘NOW’” is the motto of this duo.

Republic of Perstustungka is an informally organized band composed of Yandsen, Siew-wai and Donna Miranda. The group performed during Notthat Balai Art Festival 2007 (Malaysia), and had gigs at SiCKL in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur also in 2007.

The Gangan Ensemble is loosely composed of improvisers who work on both sound and video formats that was created to explore the intricate and different kinds of interaction and ways of harnessing sound/energy/musicianship alongside moving images. The ever-evolving membership involves a variety of video-performance artists (VJs) and electro-acoustic musicians from the Philippines, Singapore, USA, Germany, Australia, UK, Slovenia, Malaysia, and Indonesia since it's incarnation in 2007. The ensemble has performed in various countries in South East Asia, notably in NCCA's Sinemusikalye in Manila, in Choppa 2008 in Singapore, in the Cellsbutton Media Art Festival in Indonesia, and recently with electro-acoustic composer Chris Brown in Manila. It was founded by media artist Tengal with Tad Ermitano.

WE EXIST: A gathering of performative sound and visual artists

Probably the biggest gathering of sound artists in Manila to date.

Event: We Exist (a gathering of performance sound and visual artists)
Date: May 29, 2009 (Friday)
Time: 8:00 p.m. – onwards
Venue: Mogwai Cubao Expo, Cubao Quezon City

This one-night event will features sound artists and visual artists who have been practicing the discipline and medium of experimental music, sound art and new media. The event will platform this interdisciplinary form of art in a live collaborative performance. With this, the participants are requested to collaborate with each other and shall interact conceptually and aesthetically.

However, there will be no theme or any structure nor absolute rules or procedures on how will the performance would be performed and execute. It could be on improvisation, in real-time notation or on any form. Thus it should be on spontaneous, organic and unrehearsed live collaborative effort. As the title of the event suggest it will be a gathering for further exploration of these art forms through exchanges of ideas, insights and experience within the process of the performance. It also aim to introduce or to re-introduce the discipline to the public, to present and to have a possible informal discussion on the medium.


This event is an initiative effort of E.X.I.S.T. (Experimentation In Sound art Tradition) with the support and participation of individual artists involved, artist-run initiatives such as SABAW, Expansions and Media Arts Manila; with the help of Mogwai and Cubao Expo for providing the venue, and Grand Pearl Production for providing the lights and sounds system.



Experimentation In Sound art Tradition (E.X.I.S.T.) is a not-for-profit sound art organization. It is also a loose organization among sound artists, musicians and multimedia practitioner. It aims to educate people about Experimental Music and Sound Art as an interdisciplinary form of art. E.X.I.S.T. commonly engages in the use of found objects and environmental sound as a medium. Moreover, it explores with any form of audio technologies (both analog and digital), including creative audio short-circuiting also known as “Circuit-Bending”, an integral part of sound art experimentation. Another technological aspect being explored is the use of computer’s capability to generate sound, examining both theory and application, of new and existing technologies in the areas of music and sound design. Sculpture, Performance Art, Multimedia and other conventional art form and techniques can be also incorporated and merged on the process and methodology. Sound art also gives emphasis on the creative production and presentation of ‘sound’ not necessarily the ‘music’ which becomes just one component of the endless possibilities of sound art, and the total characteristic of sound and its medium. E.X.I.S.T. continues the tradition of Experimental Music and Sound Art by organizing concerts, exhibitions, symposiums and workshops in art galleries, art spaces, universities, and even conventional channels such as music bars, cafes, and open venues. It also serves as a channel to promote Experimental Music and Sound Art here in the Philippines , opening people to recognize it as an individual and interdisciplinary art form.

JAPANOISE versus PINOISE musicians perform and release an anthology album

Visiting Japanese noise artist, TOSHIYUKI SEIDO will be performing with Caviteno electronic modder/sculptor LIRIO SALVADOR on Sunday, March 22, 6pm @ Kaida Art Gallery in Q.C.
The "exclusively sound art" powerhouse collective, E.X.I.S.T. (Experimentation in Sound Art Tradition), will also be having a soft launch of their compilation album, which was also recorded and produced by Toshiyuki Seido. After listening to the subtle and not-so subtle noise samples on Seido's website, I'm very curious and excited about the album.

Masami Akita (MERZBOW) and Toshiyuki Seido on "TRUE ROMANCES"

Seido Toshiyuki -- Graduated from Tama Art University. Seido has been engaged in live sound art performances and industrial music for more than 20 years now. He has collaborated with number of contemporary musicians, ballet dancers and performance artists producing videos and performing live sound art performances in Japan. Seido recently produced audio CD’s entitled ‘Time Aspect 1 (June 2007), ‘Time Aspect 2’ (September 2007), ‘kkiba003-4 Sound work (New Art Laboratory), ‘kkiba-004’, ‘kkiba-003’, and ‘in1994’. The newest is ‘the Manila Golden Noises Album’, a collection of recorded live noises using the city noises of Manila.

Seido’s performance debut in the Philippines was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila in 1994. In 2006, a ‘piano-noise’ duo sound art performance with Takumi Ohminami was held at LRI Design Plaza, Makati City and at the College of Music of the University of the Philippines in Diliman in 2007.

In his statement, his sound work “are electronically or physically generated sound, sound from musical instruments and everyday sounds juxtaposed together to create another sound” His act of “making noise” started with complete silence, similar in starting a painting using a blank canvas. His sound installation are arranged sounds as if they are particles to be released into the space or environment”.

At present, Toshiyuki is producing a triple set CD’s with Filipino avant-garde musician group called E.X.I.S.T.

This is a poster for a media art show /exhibit / talk at the University of De La Salle, in Dasmariñas Cavite, by the Cavite-based circuit bender collective, E.X.I.S.T.

This was obviously a poster done by that (crazy) circuit-bender artist, Erick Calilan, who also curated the event. I could only guess that he obtained this illegal photo from graphic designer Abet Esguerra, who took this private picture of us when we were conducting a film workshop at Nanyang Technological Institute in Singapore last August 2006, where this photo was taken.

FYI: the picture includes me (right), filmmaker Khavn dela Cruz (left), and Mascot Brocka, an actor for this feature film we were shooting in Singapore (center), (who is also played by that crazy Abet Esguerra, who is by no chance related to former child star, Aiza Seguerra.)

Independent film using music from the SABAW Anthology of Noise, Electronic, and Experimental Music 2006

Last year, director Khavn dela Cruz asked me if he could use the music from the anthology I compiled and produced two years ago for a feature film he was doing. This is the result.

Of all the compilations and tributes put out this year, this collection
of local fringe music from as far back as the Eighties is the probably the
only one that can actually be considered a landmark. None of the artists are
household names and – as far we know – none of them have had any videos
shown on any music channel. You won’t hear any of them on the radio
either.
But the artists featured on the album, such as EAT TAE, The Children of
the Cathode Ray, Foodshelter&Clothing and Arvie Bartolome to name but a
few, are making the true, anti-Bagong Lipunan, anti-EDSA "Manila Sound." Mostly
foregoing harmony, melody or conventional song structure, this isn’t
the sound of the future. This is now.*

Overdosed Nightmare

“Overdosed Nightmare” is Kidlat Tahimik’s “Perfumed Nightmare” without the perfume, a pure nightmare set in wounded Manila, a close-up view of all that gangrene and pus. A gang of rat-munching, homophobic bums kill the night clumsily. Jesus H. Christ gets crucified for the nth time in Dagger Island. A greaseman, the image model for Poverty, bums around the Edsa Revolution anniversary which ousts another corrupt president, Estrada the actor. And Tony D., the shrewd short-fused citizen of the Philippine ghetto, sets his sights on foreign classmate Steve Banners, a pompous self-righteous dude with delusions of America's grandeur at the expense of Third World inequity.

The Cinema Committee of the National Comission for Culture and the Arts presents Sinemusikalye on 14 March, Friday, at 7 pm in Remedios Circle, Malate, with a massive new media audio-visual concert curated by Tengal with SABAW Art Projects.

For the Sinemusikalye program, three projectors and three screens will be combined to make an expansive panoramic view; while the country's best sound artists, electronic musicians, and instrumentalistswill perform live music at Remedios Circle, Malate
in this never before attempted performance of this scale.

The multi-channel projection of video images and panoramic images by Lyle Sacris and Mark Mijares, will be controlled and manipulated live by video artists,Tad Ermitano and Blums Borres (courtesy of New Media Arts Manila). The main performances will include electronica pioneers Malek Lopez and Caliph 8 scoring Mowelfund animation films in three movements; while Tengal and The Gangan Orchestra (composed of 16 of the best local improvising sound artists, electronic djs and musicians) will be performing Tad Ermitano's video graphic score with algorithms by Tengal as part of the GANGAN SERIES; and will culminate the evening with a full-orchestral sonic blast combined with the panoramic videos manipulated live by Tad Ermitano. Also performing are seminal new media artists, Elemento and The Children of Cathode Ray who will also be scoring animation films by underground legend, Roxlee, as well as a film by Tad Ermitano. The new generation of electronic musicians, Moon Fear Moon and Trojan Whores will also perform their unique brand of sound deconstruction alongside video deconstruction by Blums Borres.

At the beginning of the festivities, filmmaker John Torres will be screening the three-screen version of his feature film, Years When I was a Child Outside. Previously premiered at the Berlin Forum, in Berlinale international film festival, this will its Philippine premiere. The film will be accompanied with a live score by the Makiling Ensemble.

The ULTIMATE BIZARRE HYBRID art show of 2008 starts off this January 5, Tuesday, at Mag:net Katipunan, at 9pm.
SABAW will be starting this year with three very fascinating and provocative shows in one night. Starting off, is the second performance of the GANGAN SERIES, a series of sound art improvisational algorithms (set of rules), created and to be performed by the GANGAN ENSEMBLE. Using a video graphic score (created by video artist Tad Ermitano), Tengal has created a new set of algorithms for the GANGAN ENSEMBLE to follow and improvise on.
Second, a rare performance of Shibari, a Japanese art form of rope bondage, followed by a demonstration and talk with the only Shibari expert in the Philippines, Shinobi.
And ending the night would be MONDO BIZARRO, 90 minutes of the most mind-bending genre cinema from around the world. Narrated live by Andrew Leavold, an Australian alternative cinema connoisseur and founder TRASH VIDEO, Australia's largest alternative rental store.


Gangan Series II: VOLUME CONTROL



GANGAN SERIES started last July 2007 at Mag:net the Fort in conjunction with the "Happy Tengal Day" and "The Galleon Trade" art exhibit. Originally named the MOTZKIN GANGAN ENSEMBLE, it was created to perform the piece initially called "The Rotation of 9" that was created by Tengal, with the ensemble under the conductorship of Tad Ermitano. Since then, new ideas and concepts were introduced into the repertoire of the ensemble that gave birth to a series of new performances known now as THE GANGAN SERIES.
The GANGAN ENSEMBLE is a free improvising ensemble composed of any number of musicians/sound artists performing under the direction of its creator, Tengal.
For the GANGAN SERIES II, Tengal has incorporated a video graphic score created by Tad Ermitano and has created a new set of rules for it. Tad Ermitano's video graphic score, VOLUME CONTROL, was originally composed for his (now defunct) "noise gamelan" with the same name. With his permission, Tengal created a new concept and algorithm to go alongside the existing video graphic score to be performed by his GANGAN ENSEMBLE.

Ria Munoz – Laptop, Touch-screen Synthesizer, Electronics
(Ria Muñoz first worked with another sound artist Pow Martinez as the duo Nasal Police doing sounds for most of the performances and dance projects by contemporary dancer Donna Miranda at CCP, notably for the WIFI project and for series of Anatomy Projects at Green Papaya. She has also composed music for filmmaker Khavn dela Cruz and for Cinema One Originals. This is her second time to perform in the GANGAN ENSEMBLE.)

Inconnu ictu – Air synthesizer (infrared), Electronics
(Inconnu ictu is the Philippines' answer to noise god, Merzbow (at least in terms of amount of electronic analog equipment). With Inconnu ictu, excess is a creed. Alone he performs with a no-holds-bar aesthetic, but performing in an ensemble, he is among the best players who know how to hold back. This is his second performance in the GANGAN ENSEMBLE.)

Supreme Fist – Turntables
(Supreme Fist is definitely among the best hip hop turntablists of the Philippines. Three Times Manila Underground DJ Battle Champion, two times DMC Philippines 3rd Runner Up (2002-2003), and DMC Philippines DJ Champion of 2006. Currently, he is exploring new ways of experimenting, and this will be his first performance in the GANGAN ENSEMBLE.)

Erick Calilan (Ugong) – Various Asian instruments, Circuit-bent toys
(Erick Calilan often performs under the name UGONG, a sound art outfit utilizing home-made circuit-bent sound devices created from old Casio keyboards and Tamagochi. He is based in Dasmarinas, Cavite, with the likes of Avant sculptor and instrument builder, Lirio Salvador of ELEMENTO, who both have performed in the GANGAN ENSEMBLE before.)

Joey de Guzman – Alto Saxophone
(Joey de Guzman studied saxophone at the conservatory of music in the University of the Philippines. He is among the most sought out musicians in the local music scene and among the best improvising sax players in the Philippines. This will be his first time to perform with sound artists, as well as the GANGAN ENSEMBLE.)

Anto Bautista – Electric guitar
(Anto Bautista likes jazz. He also likes noise and other strange music. He has been a mainstay guitar player in most of Tengal's albums. Utilizing his creative improvisational skills on guitar, he likes to incorporate his traditional jazz background with new experimental explorations to push between genre boundaries. Like jazz saxophonist Joey, this is also his first time to perform in the GANGAN ENSEMBLE.)

SHIBARI: JAPANESE ROPE BONDAGE PERFORMANCE + TALK:



Shibari used to be derived from an ancient Japanese military rope bondage technique. Originally it was used for torture and in capturing prisoners, but bondage as a sexual activity first came to notice in Japan in the late Edo period. In recent times, Japanese bondage has been popular among the western BDSM scene, due to its visually beautiful intricate ropework.
Shinobi will be doing a brief performance with a rope model while being musically accompanied by Tengal. An informal Q and A and demo will be conducted right after.

Shinobi is a "Nawashi" (Rope Artist) based in the Philippines from the College of Fine Arts taking Visual Communication as his major from 1991 to 1997. He's provided creative expertise for professional theater as production and creative artist for over 15 years and has worked for numerous advertising agencies as consultant and creative art director for print and visual media.

ELECTROSTATIC SOUND CONFERENCE II

Haven't had enough frenzy? NEW MEDIA ARTS MANILA extends your New Year celebration with digital fireworks by offering the second installment of ELECTROSTATIC SOUND CONFERENCE .

The CHILDREN OF CATHODE RAY pays homage to the great experimental film maker, animator and art icon ROX LEE by providing live score to Lizard and Ink, two early works that showcase the lyrical and abrasive sides of the man who has inspired and influenced many of today's contemporary artists. CCR also lays background to some interations of Tad Ermitano's generative video installation /mutation. Pronounced "permutation," the installation featured a probabilistic editing algorithm coded by Ermitano, which creates live variations of the classic narrative. /mutation's videos are the first Philippine videos to be edited by artificial intelligence.

Imported from Canada MAGGOT BREEDER is the long term ongoing musical project of Reuel Ordonez, filipino by birth and now residing in Montreal, Quebec. Utilizing the guitar as the primary sound source, Maggot Breeder creates a dark yet oddly serene soundscape which invokes images of war, conflict, pain, despair and suffering. Video art by Tad Ermitano.

Lirio Salvador, sculptor and luthier whose ornate, chrome-plated instruments are featured on television, displayed in galleries, and played by his group Elemento. Lirio performs along side Jonjie Ayson . (appearance in cooperation with E.X.I.S.T.) Video art by Blums Borres.

Erick Calilan a.k.a. UGONG amuses us with circuit-bent tweaking of custom lunch-box-plastic-toy electronics. (appearance in cooperation with E.X.I.S.T.)

Sound Art Conference this October

New Media Arts Manila (NMAM) was formed to curate, stage, and promote New Media Art -- art made with electronic, audiovisual, and information technologies. It includes sound art, video art, interactive electronics, algorithmic art, computer music, and whatever art forms new technologies may yet spawn. As NMAM's first project, ELECTROSTATIC SOUND CONFERENCE will showcase the full range of performative sound art pieces through the performances of the following artists:

Malek Lopez, Berklee-trained virtuoso who is the principal composer for the band Drip, and half of the abrasive electronica duo Rubber Inc.;

Mu Arae Transmission, (aka Moon Fear Moon aka John Sobrepena), who composes haunting and eerie instances of IDM (Intelligent Dance Music);

Blums Borres, 3D animator, performative video artist, and sound artist who dedicates himself to expanding the sonic territory of the electric guitar;

Jing Garcia, tech editor of The Manila Times who founded the seminal sound art group Children of Cathode Ray in 1989 and composes industrial/ambient pieces as autoceremony;

Tengal, frenetic composer, a tireless sound artist, the founder of S.A.B.A.W. sound art collective, and a one-man record label;

Lirio Salvador, sculptor and luthier whose ornate, chrome-plated instruments are featured on television, displayed in galleries, and played by his group Elemento;

Tad Ermitano, filmmaker and video artist who creates custom programs and hardware for his art installations. His work has appeared in Time magazine.
